Lucido introduces bill to prohibit placing patients with COVID-19 in nursing homes

LANSING, Mich. — Legislation introduced by Sen. Peter J. Lucido on Wednesday would prohibit the transfer of people who have COVID-19 into the state’s long-term care facilities.

“Nursing homes and long-term care facilities were never equipped to deal with a virus like COVID-19 that has been so infectious and so dangerous to our elderly and vulnerable populations,” said Lucido, R-Shelby Township. “I firmly believe this never should have happened, and this bill would help ensure that it never, ever happens again in our state.”

Senate Bill 956 would ban the intentional transfer of people who have COVID-19 into any nursing home facility and require the establishment of a centralized treatment facility in each health care region of the state to help take care of individuals while they recuperate before returning to a nursing home upon testing negative.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Health Policy and Human Services.
